Getting to know Deep Ellum

Deep Ellum is an arts and music district east of downtown Dallas. Its history is tied to the arrival of railroads in the 1870s and to the businesses, musicians and communities that developed around Elm Street and nearby blocks.

Today the district includes live-music venues, murals, galleries and reused commercial buildings. Texas designated Deep Ellum a cultural district in 2020. The Blues Alley mural project offers one way to learn about the district’s music history while walking through it.

Check at the address, not the town name

  • Check individual venue and event schedules before a visit; the district’s daytime and late-evening activity can be very different.
  • When assessing a residence near a venue, visit the actual block during an event and review building access and parking rather than relying on a district-wide description.
  • School attendance zones, flood risk, HOA obligations, utilities and property taxes follow the exact address. Use current records: TEA school district locator, FEMA flood maps, county appraisal districts.
