Getting to know Roanoke

Roanoke’s historic downtown is centered on Oak Street. The Rock Building, originally the Silver Spur Saloon, now serves as a Visitor Center and Museum and provides a starting point for the downtown’s history.

The city’s resources include a historic walking tour, parking information and cultural programming on Oak Street and nearby civic spaces. Downtown is a distinct part of Roanoke; neighborhoods elsewhere should be compared by their actual access to the core and local recreation facilities.

Check at the address, not the town name

  • Check event schedules and the current parking map before comparing conditions along Oak Street.
  • Walk or drive the actual route from the property to downtown; a Roanoke address does not mean the historic core is within walking distance.
  • School attendance zones, flood risk, HOA obligations, utilities and property taxes follow the exact address. Use current records: TEA school district locator, FEMA flood maps, county appraisal districts.
